The disc-less box: is GTA 6 killing physical games?
You buy the box, you open it, there's no disc. Just a slip of card with a code to redeem. That's GTA 6's physical edition.
This isn't an oversight, it's arithmetic. On a digital sale, the publisher keeps nearly the full price: no retailer cut, no disc pressing, no logistics. On a game that will sell tens of millions, that difference runs into the hundreds of millions.
The most anticipated game of the decade dropping the disc sets a precedent. It's exactly what Sony was waiting for to accelerate its push to all-digital.
In Europe, the question was put to the Commission: can it force publishers to keep physical media alive? The answer is no. It has no legal power to.
In Brazil, a bill goes further without going that far: it would require publishers to warn before shutting servers down and to guarantee a minimum support window.
What's at stake with GTA 6 is bigger than GTA 6: it's whether you still own what you buy.
